A fine marriage of old style values
If three's a crowd, then two's certainly a company for a couple
of salford's few thriving firms. The dynamic duo of Barry and Son and W.S.Henderson
and Son are engineering suppliers with a difference - they thrive on other
companies' failures.
For whenever a business folds and goes into liquidation - be it a back street
garage or large conglomorate - Barry's and Hendersons are in like a shot
to pick up any surplus stock. The fact that they've built up their stock
to such an extent that they can claim to offer the best supply of engineering
tools in the area, may be a sad sign of the times.
A PRIDE
But Managing Director Eric Snelgrove isn't complaining. "We
may not be a big business concern or offer micro-chip technology," he
said.
"But we're a private firm which takes a pride in the service we offer
the customer. We believe in the old-fashioned way of doing things."
The success story of his two, now-merged companies, began just after the
war, with acquisition of Government surplus stock ranging from nuts and bolts
to engineering cutting tools.
The business progressed over the years by providing a good, reliable service
and more recently has started selling stock which is surplus to requirements
to firms which have felt the chill wind of the recession.
BOOMING
It isn't a fate likely to befall Mr.Snelgrove's concern. In
fact, business is booming to such an extent that Barry and Sons bought out
Hendersons a few years ago when it was tottering on the brink of collapse.
The two now occupy 18,000 sq. ft. on a quarter-acre site in Bute Street,
Weaste employing a workforce of 10. They sell everything from car grills
to floor cleaning rags; to air, electrical and machine tools.
Mr Snelgrove says they are now hoping to get Hendersons back
on its feet and is confident they can offer the best motor repair and re-winding
business in the area.
And contrary to the projected image, theirs isn't just a small-time set-up.
They can boast a machine shop, a pick up and delivery service and a six-ton
lorry-mounted crane on a 12½-ton truck enabling them to handle electrical
motors up to 300 horse power.
Business is steadily being increased even during the depth of the recession.
"We buy machinery and tools equipment etc. from Companies going into
liquidation. Therefore we can offer a wide range of tools, nuts and bolts
to Radial Arm Drills, at only a fraction of the recommended retail price,
and deliver it off the shelf.
